TBG (The Berndt Group), a national digital customer experience agency and leading Sitecore partner, is thrilled to announce that The Baltimore Sun has recognized the agency as a “Top Workplace.” Who determines Top Workplaces? The best judges: the employees.

Driven mainly by employee surveys, this honor comes in the midst of a challenging year for many businesses, and is a testament to the strong workplace culture that TBG has cultivated over the years, even before the pandemic. TBG is fortunate to have avoided layoffs or furloughs during its 30-year history, and especially this year, thanks to strong leadership and a committed team.

Each year, The Sun collaborates with Energage, a consulting firm whose mission is to help businesses create workplaces where people want to work. “In times of great change, it is more important than ever to maintain a connection among employees,” said Eric Rubino, Energage CEO. “When you give your employees a voice, you come together to navigate challenges and shape your path forward based on real-time insights into what works best for your organization.”

To determine the winners, Energage surveys the employees of nominated businesses who rate their workplace culture and then scores and ranks the results (the nomination of a company is also made by an employee). The anonymous survey uniquely measures drivers of engaged cultures that are critical to the success of any organization. Measures include:

  • Alignment: where the company is headed, its values, cooperation, effective meetings;

  • Coaching: managers care about concerns, are helpful, encourage employee development;

  • Connection: employees feel appreciated, work is meaningful, working at full potential, clued in to each other;

  • Engagement: productivity, retention, recruiting;

  • Leadership: confidence in company leaders;

  • Performance: execution, open-mindedness, innovation, clued-in leadership; and

  • Basics (pay, benefits, flexibility, training, expectations).

The survey also offers insights from employees about what makes the company unique. In other words, this honor is based entirely off of employee feedback, and therefore is of great importance to TBG. This is the first year TBG was nominated and participated in this process.

When asked why he loves working at TBG, Project Manager Joe Hansbrough commented, "In my experience, TBG has constantly demonstrated appreciation and respect for its workers and their families first and foremost, while maintaining a high standard for the work that is achieved.” He continues, “TBG hasn't simply brought together a collection of people of many different walks of life and parts of the world to work together on complex projects—it cultivates a community of friends and neighbors who motivate, advocate and encourage each other to succeed. All the mindfulness, care, respect, and positivity you hope for in a healthy relationship is unexpectedly found here. Unexpected because this is supposed to be a workplace but instead, it is like a home. And I believe it is because they recognize the value of the person(s) they work with and those they work for."

John Berndt, CEO and Michelle Gèczy, COO, added, “This honor is deeply humbling. Though we feel it reflects the reality of the excellent culture and workplace we have worked hard to create, we know that winning this award was the result of our team filling out positive surveys when we are in the middle of a pandemic. We continue to be moved by the cohesiveness and strength of the TBG team during this unprecedented time, and grateful for all the hard work and positive vibes this year. The fact that such positivity makes for this public recognition is wonderful and outstanding! It really is one of the nicest moments of our personal careers, and we think it bodes very well for TBG as a company. We have a truly amazing team at TBG.”

In addition to The Sun’s Top Workplaces honor, TBG has won numerous awards for its work, including multiple Sitecore Experience Awards, ADDY® awards, and Webby honors (the “Oscars” of the Web).
