Integrating against Valspar’s formidable color database, TBG implemented a fully Responsive color picker experience on the site, including the ability for users to filter lines of color and to save or email digital “chips” of specific colors on their phone.  Colors are updated automatically as new ones become available and the experience makes the best use of the phone/tablet surface for color browsing.

The site features a wide range of content and capabilities, including how-to videos, find-a-retailer (using smartphone location), product ratings, spec sheets, and more. Without cluttering the tiny smartphone form factor, the site delivers a deep retail user experience online.

Valspar is an international, market leading paint and coatings company—best known for its excellent consumer brand, but also as the source of coatings for many soda cans and other industrial applications. Headquartered in Minneapolis, MN, this organization is also a storied American company whose name dates back to 1903. Today the company has many well-known brands including Valspar Paints, Cabot Stains, Plasti-Kote, Guardsman, and others. The organization is closely partnered with a leading big-box hardware brand, and has aggressively experimented with cutting-edge marketing and alternative business models in its consumer and professional paint lines since they were first introduced.

Valspar chose to work in collaboration with digital agencies TBG (The Berndt Group) and DraftFCB to produce a Responsive Mobile site for its consumer and pro paint lines, and the results were significant.

Highly Iterative, Agile

Working in a highly iterative, agile way, the two firms worked with Valspar to develop an effective and streamlined website that provided immediate gratification—including feature-rich mobile and tablet support to visitors which was also a major leap forward for Valspar’s increasingly mobile customer base. Integrating the best tool concepts from the consumer paint sector, and providing the cleanest and least cluttered presentation in all cases, the site’s aesthetic carefully reinforced the Valspar brand and followed best practices for Responsive Web Design.

Key to the approach was a mobile first mindset, which allowed the teams to hone in on an experience that would provide high usability on mobile—even for the user who was standing in the aisle of a big-box store, getting ready to purchase. The site was also developed to be able to function as a repeatable model for multiple brands as part of an overall evolving strategy.
