The Berndt Group created a visually stunning Flash-based interactive kiosk presentation for the National Aquarium in Baltimore (NAIB), as part of the Shark Quest exhibit. The three stand-alone kiosks were featured at the entrance to the exhibit.
The application was a self-launching, full-screen Flash application that runs under the kiosk operating system. Rotating through a series of three complex screensavers that featured different species of swimming, life-like sharks, a user answered a series of questions to 'test their shark smarts'. Users could also sign up to receive Aqua Mail, the Aquarium's email newsletter, or a shark screensaver.
The kiosks required a high level of sophisticated problem-solving and troubleshooting to anticipate user scenarios - such as hidden timeouts running in the background to account for users not finishing the quiz and keylocking functionality.
The Berndt Group won an international Horizon Interactive Design Award for this project.
We have worked on a number of other projects for the Aquarium, including designing Aqua Mail, the Aquarium's email newsletter, kiosk sequences and Web components for the Dolphin Play Show and Shark Quest exhibit, and an interactive CD-ROM about the Chesapeake Bay. We also designed microsites for the Australia and Frogs exhibits and a Flash-based Trip Planner application.
