TBG Launches Website for Baker Artist Portfolios
New Website Builds on TBG’s Decades of Work in the Arts & Nonprofit Sectors
TBG (The Berndt Group), a prominent and growing national digital agency located in Baltimore, MD, is proud to announce the launch of the Baker Artist Portfolios’ new website, bakerartist.org. This website builds on over two decades of TBG’s work in the arts and nonprofit sectors.
Managed by the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance, the Baker Artist Awards recognizes outstanding artists in six disciplines—Literary Arts, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Interdisciplinary Arts, Music and Film/Video—from Baltimore, Maryland. With a goal to feature the artists’ work year round, the new website for the Baker Artist Portfolios sought to move toward a new era in which the website and the organization’s purpose goes beyond its annual awards. The new site primarily serves as a portfolio site—a way to showcase the breadth and depth of artistic talent in the Baltimore area. To facilitate and improve content and artist portfolio management, the organization also desired to replatform onto a new CMS that provides better standards and stronger back-end usability. The new website was developed on Drupal CMS by TBG’s partner Zivtech, a Drupal Web development firm based in Philadelphia. This project is the first digital experience that TBG has completed for bakerartist.org.
TBG developed Web strategy recommendations based on creative analysis and best practices research and had working sessions with major stakeholders. This process enabled TBG to develop a new design and user-driven, higher usability architecture for the site that resonates for all users, especially artists. With the artist’s portfolio as the primary focus, the website engages the user year-round rather than during a small window of time during the award submission period (as was the practice in the former version of the website).
The new user experience is highly usable on both the front- and back-end of the site while conveying a visually striking look-and-feel. The new architecture better incorporates works from all artistic disciplines, including music and literary art, in the redesign, since audio and text are experienced differently from visual art. In addition to the new portfolio-centric approach the new site also provides intuitive navigation, lends authenticity and validation to the Baltimore arts scene, and demonstrates the breadth of media and styles represented via captivating imagery. Effective interaction design moves the experience beyond static visuals and ensures an engaging experience, including the integration of social media to promote the work and the artistic community.
“The new Baker Artist Portfolios site is a blend of stunning design and information architecture. It is the paradigm of a site that helps to advance the changing mission of an organization, and we know that the Baltimore arts scene will benefit from it,” said TBG’s CEO John Berndt. “I think that the design is one of the most beautiful ones TBG has produced to date.”
